Abstract

In this study, I want to examine the proposal that using multimedia techniques for traffic signal control will provide greater efficiency than the control systems being used now.
Modern traffic signal systems have fixed signal time and these times are based on traffic volume. Traffic volume is measured by detectors in the roads which count passing cars or related vehicles.
But the detectors are unable to observe or record any disruption in the flow of traffic that might occur before or after the point at which the detectors are located.
Present traffic control systems offer no alternatives to the detectors for evaluating crippled traffic flow.
This study will use a signal controled with a ITV camera. This system can independently recognize a situation on a road or crosswalk through the input of image can analyse the situation and select best signal time in accordance with its analysis.
This study will provide practical testing of the system. Since the failure of any traffic control system can have tragic consequences including the loss of human life, it is necessary that we verify the precision and applicability of the proposed multimedia system before it is system recommended for general implementation. This study will provide that verification.
